Meet Dr. Darren

Darren Gold

Dr. Gold is a specialist colorectal surgeon with a subspecialist interest in proctology and inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn’s disease and Ulcerative Colitis). These problems include haemorrhoids, anal pain, anal fissure, pilonidal sinus, anal fistula, faecal incontinence and constipation. In addition to his medical qualification from the University of London, Dr Gold is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, an Intercollegiate Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland and a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England. He also has a Masters degree in Surgical Science and has been published extensively by a range of surgical journals and publications.

Dr Gold qualified from London University in 1989. He spent 11 years undertaking his surgical training, gaining experience in hospitals throughout the South of England. He spent a year doing research at the world famous St Mark’s Hospital for fistula and anal disease, in London, culminating in the award of a Masters in Surgical Science in 1997.He returned to St Mark’s in 1999 for a post-fellowship year of training as the Resident Surgical Officer, as well as a short sabbatical at the St Mark’s Hospital, Mount Sinaii Hospital, Toronto, before taking up his appointment in 2000 as a consultant colorectal surgeon at Basingstoke Hospital in Hampshire, an internationally recognised unit for the management of cancer of the colon and rectum. He was also a colorectal surgeon at the Pelican Centre, Basingstoke, a specialist cancer unit dedicated to disorders of the pelvis and liver.

In 2003, he married his Sydney born wife Julia, and after a further four years in England decided to relocate to Sydney. Dr Gold is a Senior Lecturer in Surgery at St Vincent’s Clinical School, UNSW, and has a private practice at St Vincent’s Private Hospital, City East Day Hospital in Maroubra and Sydney Private Hospital in Ashfield.

Dr Gold is the Secretary for ISPP (the International Society of Pelviperineology) and was one of the founder members of the South of England Pelvic Floor Group.

Dr Gold has given numerous international lectures in his field of expertise as well as running numerous surgical training workshops both nationally and internationally.

What Sets Sydney Proctology Apart…

Dr Gold has been a qualified doctor for over 30 years, and in Specialist Practice for over 20 years. He has been a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England since 1992. He obtained his Intercollegiate Fellowship of The Royal College of Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland in 1999 and was awarded the Royal Australasian College Fellowship in 2007, ad eundem. He has worked at St Mark’s Hospital in London, the national hospital for fistula and anal disease, for 2 years, along with 7 years as a consultant at Basingstoke Hospital in England, an internationally recognised colorectal unit. He has been in Specialist practice in Australia for 13 years

Dr Gold has focussed on anal disease for nearly 25 years. He was awarded a Masters Degree from London University in 1996 for his research into anal anatomy and has continued to study, publish and teach in his chosen field until the present time. He has performed many thousands of anal procedures providing the most up to date and evidence-based techniques available.

Dr Gold has travelled the world learning new techniques from innovative research units throughout the globe and has been asked to subsequently teach these innovations locally, internationally and globally. He has taught and lectured in England, Australia, China, Korea, Italy, France, Austria, New Zealand, Germany, USA, Canada, Mexico, Brazil and Japan.
